Travel on Rt 44 west through Avon, Canton, and just after you go over the Farmington River take a right into Satan's Kingdom parking lot.  L: Marie Coons

Saturday, May 3, 2003,  9:00 a.m.,  PSF Hike, Flower Walk on the Henry Buck Trail

Learn about unique natural history of local plants as well as their Native American and folk uses.  Less than a mile at an easy pace.  Approx. 2 hrs.  Meet at the entrance to the Matthies Grove Recreation Area, Peoples State Forest, East River Road, Pleasant Valley.  Bring water and insect spray.  L: Walt Landgraf

Saturday, May 3, 2003,  9:00 a.m.,  AMC Hike, Tippecansett, Ben Utter, & Escoheag semi-loop (B3C)

Hike approx. 8.5 mi. on the Tippecansett trail on to beautiful Ben Utter trail, & exiting on Escoheag trail. Rain cancels. If in doubt, call by 8 am. Meet Voluntown on left side of Beach Pond on Rte. 165. From Norwich go North on Rte. 395 & take Exit 85. Go approx. 7.8 mi. on route 138. At junction with Rte. 165, go left onto Rte. 165 to Beach Pond (approx 2.7 mi.), which is on the Connecticut/Rhode Island border. Go left into parking lot. Sunday, May 4, 2003,  8:00 a.m.,  SG Hike, Early Bird Watchers' Hike

Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the park entrance.  The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile in from Whitney Avenue, on the left-hand side of the street.  Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired.  Please do not bring pets.  The hike is open to the public, and there is no fee.

Thursday, May 8,  8:45 a.m., FCE Hike, Ragged Mountain, Berlin-Southington-New Britain

From the center of Farmington, take Rt 4 east to Rt 84 west to Rt 72 east (a left exit off of 84), and take the Rt 372 Corbin Ave. exit. Take a right off the exit onto Rt 372 south and follow until the road makes a "Y", take the right split onto Rt 71A south, and take a right onto West Lane (about the 6th street on the right). Follow West Lane to the Ragged Mt. Preserve sign and park on the road here.  L: Marie Coons

Saturday, May 10, 2003,  10:00 a.m., Tory Den History Hike

The Stanley-Whitman House, a living-history center in Farmington, has scheduled this history hike.   This outing will take 2 hours.  Rain date: May 17.  We will hike to Tory Den in Burlington, a rock formation that locals refer to as a cave, where Loyalists held secret meetings during the Revolutionary War.  Participants will meet at the museum and drive together to the start of the hike, which will take just over an hour. It is offered for adults and children. The cost is $3 per person- reservations required: call the museum at 860-677-9222 and for more information about the hike, call Peter Devlin, museum interpreter.  The museum is at 37 High St., Farmington.

Tuesday, May 13, 8:45 a.m., "Unofficial" FCE Hike, AT—Bear Mt., Salisbury

Meet at the lot in front of Marandino’s in New Hartford-take Rt 44 west through Avon, Canton, and after crossing the Farmington River into New Hartford, Marandino’s is on the left diagonally across from Satan’s Kingdom. I plan on hiking the Undermoutain Trail to the AT to the Paradise Lane Trail. Although not may miles, this hike will be steep. Anticipate a 3:30 pm return to the cars.  L: Marie Coons

Thursday, May 15,  8:45 a.m., FCE Hike, Buttermilk Falls, Plymouth

Meet on Lane Hill Rd. in Plymouth. This may be a longer hike so we may be back later than 11. This can be a challenging place to find, so give yourself time to explore and look at a street map first. Follow Rt 6 west through Bristol, into Terryville and Plymouth, take a left onto Eagle St. which changes its name to South Eagle St. (this street is about the 5th street after the intersection with Rt 72), follow for a few miles to the end, take a left onto South Main St. then very shortly, take a right onto Lane Hill Rd. Park here on the right and we will carpool to the start of the hike.  L: Marie Coons

Join CT Forest & Park Assoc sponsored hike on the premier Metacomet Trail; hike entire trail and win Metacomet Badge. Hike 6 miles from Pratling Pond Rd. to Rt. 44. Short drive to trailhead. Monday, May 19, 1 p.m., AMC Hike, Beacon Falls/Naugatuck State Forest (C3B

3.5 mile hike with number of impressive waterfalls. From Route 8 South get off of Exit 24. Go right at end of ramp. Right again over Green Metal Bridge. Right again after Bridge. Turn right again onto Cold Spring Road. Follow Cold Spring Road for 1.3 miles, and turn left at fork into unpaved Prkg Lot. Cold Spring Road becomes a dirt road running along an old Railroad Track. Tuesday, May 20, 8:45 a.m., "Unofficial" FCE Hike, Mattatuck Trail, Morris to Litchfield

Meet at Burlington Commons where Rt 4 and Rt 69 intersect. This 8.5 mile hike could have some wet and muddy sections. We should be back to the cars by 3:45 pm.  L: Marie Coons

Thursday, May 22,  8:45 a.m., FCE Hike, Enders State Forest, Granby ("PICNIC" to follow hike) (Note: directions changed)

Drive west on Rt 44 through Avon, into Canton, take a right onto Rt. 179 north, follow for a few miles and just after you pass the intersection with Rt 309, take the diagonal right onto Case St. Follow this to Rt 219, take a right and about 100 yards up, take a right into the Enders State Forest parking lot. These falls are beautiful and we will take some time to explore them.  Although this will be a short hike, it will be steep in places. We will have an indoor/outdoor picnic after the hike --  email Marie with what you're bringing and she can provide directions on request.  L: Marie Coons

Friday, May 23, 10:30 a.m., AMC Hike, Wadsworth Falls (B3C

5.5 mi. hike makes loop around Wadsworth Mansion, visits giant laurel tree & 2 waterfalls. Smaller one consisting of water cascading down series of sandstone steps. Larger one is volume of water pouring over shelf of metamorphic bedrock. Take Route 9 to Route 66 W. in Middletown until you reach Route 157. Turn left onto Route 157, and the Park entrance is a few miles down the road on your left. From Route 84 take Route 691 until it turns into Route 66. Follow Route 66 to Route 147 across from Guida's Restaurant. Follow Route 147 until you reach Route 157. Turn left on to Route 157, and the Park is 2.6 miles down the road on your right. From East on Rt 72, take Plainville exit 2; go right on Rt 372, and park in shopping center on right. From West on I-84, take Crooked St exit; go left at light, over highway, and left onto Rt 372. Meet at Sperry Park next to the baseball fields. Rt. 10 just north of the old Towpath School in Avon (enter at light for the Avon Wellness Center and take a right). This hike is about 6 miles and we should be back to the cars by 3 pm.  L: Marie Coons

9 mi. round trip with great views from Traprock Ridge. CFPA is joint sponsor (use toward CFPA Mattabesett patch). About 5 hrs including lunch break. Meet CFPA parking lot, 16 Meriden Rd.
