NOVEMBER 2001 SCHEDULE Thursday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. Buttermilk Falls and west on Mattatuck Trail, Plymouth Park on Lane Hill Rd. in Plymouth. We will hike a section west of the falls. Take Rt. 6 west through Bristol into Terryville. Take 3rd left after crossing Rt. 72 onto S. Main. Turn left on S. Eagle St. When this ends at S. Main St./Wolcott Rd., turn left, and then Lane Hill is next right. Leader Marie Coons Saturday, November 3, 10:30 a.m. Sierra Club Hike - Peoples State Forest, Barkhamsted Meet at the stone museum at the southern entrance to the park for a 6+ mile, medium difficulty, 3 hour hike on beautiful woodland trails. From the junction of Route 44 and 181, drive north to the intersection with Route 318. Turn right (east), cross the Farmington River, take the first left onto East River Road. Fork right at the People's Forest sign onto Greenwoods Road. In 0.2 mile, turn left up a short gravel road to the parking lot. Rain date November 4. Sunday, November 4, 11:00 a.m. Sleeping Giant Hike, Hamden Fall Hikers' Hike (experienced hikers only) -- Meet at bulletin board at park entrance. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 9 a.m. Great Pond, Simsbury Meet in front of Border's bookstore, Simsbury Commons, just north of Rt.
44/Rt. 167 junction. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m. Metacomet Trail Meet in front of CVS, Post Office Square, Rt. 10, Farmington. Thursday, Nov. 8, 9a.m. Ragged Mt., Metacomet Trail, New Britain-Southington Follow Rt. 10 south; bear left at fork onto Cooke St., left on Rt. 372 east, just past the new Big Kmart, take a right on Crooked St., go to T intersection and take a right, then about 200 yards up take a left onto Ledge Rd. Follow this thin curvy road for a few miles (it changes its name to Shuttle Meadow Rd.) until it intersects Long Bottom Rd. Take a right onto Long Bottom Rd. and park in the lot across from Rogers’ Orchard store. We will carpool from here a short distance and hike the northwest section of Ragged Mt. Rogers’ Orchard has wonderful apples, pears, etc. if it is still open. Leader Marie Coons Tuesday, Nov. 13, 8:30 a.m. Granville State Forest, Granville, MA Meet at the parking lot on the side of Borders in Simsbury Commons. Bring plenty of food and water and expect a 1:00 pm return to Borders. Leader Marie Coons Wednesday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. Tunxis Trail - Mt. Ratlum Meet at Marandino's Market/Dunkin Donuts - New Hartford. Optional lunch afterwards - LaSalle Market, Collinsville. Leader Diana Meyer Thursday, Nov.15, 9a.m. Wilcox Park and Metacomet Trails, Bloomfield-Tariffville [PICNIC to follow] Take Rt 10 north to Rt. 185 east, go past Penwood and at Wade’s farm store,
take a left onto West St. At the next intersection, bear left onto Duncaster Rd.
Follow for a few miles to a left onto Adams Rd. At the end of Adams Rd., take a
right on Hoskins Rd. and Wilcox Park is about ¾ mile up on the left. Park in
the lower lot. After the hike, we will have an indoor picnic to celebrate the end of our
official hikes (unofficial hikes continue). Joan Skydel has kindly volunteered to host the event at
her home. Marie will distribute directions. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 8:30 a.m. Mattatuck Trail, Thomaston Meet in the Burlington Commons parking lot and we will car pool to Black Rock State Park. The hike will be about 4 miles and expect a 12:30 pm return to Burlington. Leader Marie Coons Wednesday, Nov. 21, 9 a.m. Hillstead Museum Trails/Metacomet Trail Meet in rear parking lot behind Hillstead's buildings. Use Mountain Road entrance. Leader Diana Meyer Tuesday, Nov. 27, 8:30 a.m. Mattatuck Trail Again, meet in the Burlington Commons parking lot and we will car pool from here to continue our trek on the Mattatuck Trail. Expect a 12 noon return to Burlington. Leader Marie Coons Wednesday, Nov. 28, 9 a.m. Pine Knob Loop - Cornwall Bridge (near AT) Cancelled - will be rescheduled Meet at Stop & Shop, Unionville. Bring lunch. Leader Diana Meyer Thursday, Nov. 29, 8:30 a.m. Housatonic River Walk -- Appalachian Trail Cancelled - bad weather Meet at Burlington Commons (Rt. 4 junction with Rt. 69) with lots of food and water. The first 4.8 miles of this hike are flat, so we will use a brisk pace, then we will climb Silver Hill and descend to Rt. 4 in Cornwall Bridge to add another 2 miles onto our trek for a total of 6.8 miles.
