OCTOBER 2001 SCHEDULE Thursday, Oct. 4, Tipping Rock-Tunxis Trail, New Hartford Follow Rt. 44 west through Canton, into New Hartford and park at Satan’s
Kingdom Recreation area on the right. We will try a loop and maybe even add on
the Valley Outlook trail. 9 AM. Sunday, October 7, South Taconic Trail in Salisbury Led by Walt Landgraf, hike in three states, visit the highest point in CT., and the summits of Brace and Round Mountain. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the entrance to the Matthies Grove Picnic Area, Peoples State Forest on East River Rd. Bring water, insect spray, lunch, and allow about 8 hours for this hike of about 9 miles, with some steep up and down sections. We plan to return to Peoples about 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, The historic Wolf Den in Mashmoquet State Forest, Pomfret. Call Jane Macomber at 676-2443 for details. Tentatively the plan is to meet @ P.O. Square CVS, Farmington Rt. 10 @ 11:00AM and carpool to the site. 4 mile, 3 hour hike. Thursday, Oct. 11, Ragged Mt. Preserve Trail, Berlin Take Rt. 4 east to Rt. 84 west, left exit onto Rt. 72 east to Rt. 372 Corbins
Ave. exit. Take a right off the exit (head towards New Britain), follow Rt. 372
south until road splits, follow right split onto Rt. 71A south. Take a right
onto West Lane (about a mile, 6th street on right). Follow West Lane
to the Ragged Mt. Preserve sign and park here. We will hike a different section
of this trail (right instead of left). 9 AM. Saturday,

VIEW FROM ATOP TALCOTT MOUNTAIN Sunday, October 14, 1:30 p.m. Sleeping Giant Hike, Hamden Fall Foliage Hike -- Meet at bulletin board at park entrance Monday, Oct. 15, Metacomet Trail Meet @ P.O. Square CVS, Farmington Rt. 10 @ 9:00AM. Details TBA. 2-3 hour hike/adventure - bring a hearty snack as return time may run over lunchtime. Thursday, Oct. 18, West Peak, Metacomet Trail, Berlin-Meriden Follow the directions above for the Ragged Mt. Preserve trail except do NOT
turn onto West St., continue south along Rt. 71A to a right onto Rt. 364 and
then a right into Timberlin Park and Golf Course. Park in the first lot you come
to. We will carpool from here and hike a section of the Metacomet that has
opened since the blue book was published. We might be back to the cars a little
late-11:30 or so. 9 AM. Saturday, October 20, 10:15 a.m. Sierra Club Hike - Zoar Lake Loop Trail Fall Foliage Hike -- Crunch through the leaves as
we pass Prydden Brook, Lake Zoar, a water-fall, and scenic outlooks in
Newtown. Hike over intermediate-level terrain 6.5 miles at a medium
pace. Ice-cream stop afterward. Rain-date Oct. 21. Bring
boots, lunch, water. Take I-84 W. to exit 11, onto Rt. 34 E. Go exactly
6.0 miles. At Zoar Beach, park by tiny, blue "Paugussett Trail"
sign in "Monroe" lot on right. Sunday, October 21, 1:30 p.m. Sleeping Giant Hike, Hamden East End Hike -- Meet at bulletin board at park entrance Monday, Oct. 22, Tunxis Trail Meet @ Marandino's/Dunkin Donuts, Rt. 44, New Hartford @ 9:00AM. Destination to be determined. 2-3 hour hike/adventure - bring a hearty snack as return time may run over lunchtime. Thursday, Oct. 25, Tunxis Yellow-dot and Mile of Ledges Trails, Burlington Take Rt. 4 west through Unionville, up the hill to the center of Burlington. In the center, take a left on Rt. 69 south and then an immediate right onto Rock Rd. Follow Rock Rd to the end and take a left onto Johnnycake Mt. Rd., follow to the end of the paved section and park. Since we will end on Greer Rd., I will need about five cars to meet me at 8:30 am on Greer Rd. for this car spot.
