Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, 1:30 p.m. Sleeping Giant New Year's Day Hike
Start the new year "on the right foot!" Meet at the bulletin board at the park entrance. The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, on the left-hand side, about 0.5 mile in from Whitney Avenue (Rt. 10). Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water

About 8 mi. of ups and downs over various trails, depending on weather conditions. Dogs who like winter hiking welcome. Meet CPL south of exit 44 off Merritt Pkwy. Rain or slippery driving cancels. Hike #2 of Winter Beach Tour. 3 mi., 30 ft. elevation gain. Bring water, lunch. See extensive salt marshes, diverse flora & fauna, picturesque rocky shoreline, views of the Sound, nature trail, birding area, Meigs Point, Cedar Island. Meet at Meigs Point Nature Center in Madison, I95 exit 62 S onto Hammonasset Beach State Park connector, .3 mi. beyond Rt 1 is park entrance, from entrance follow signs to parking area adjacent to Meigs Point Nature Center. Meet on Mountain Spring Rd., near Rt. 4, adjacent to fish hatchery. Turn S off Rt. 4 about 1/2 mile W of Punch Brook Rd. blinker. Snow shoes recommended. Return to cars about 11:30. L: Len Berton
