SEPTEMBER 2003 SCHEDULE Wednesday, September 3, 8:30 a.m., Holcomb Farm Trails, Granby We did the East trails on 7/28, so now we'll try the West trails. Meet at Border's/Simsbury Commons -- Jnc. Rts. 44/167. Expected return to cars by noon. :L: Len Berton Saturday, September 6, 1pm, AMC Hike, Air Line State Park Trail (B3D). 6 mi. hike on Air Line Trail & Colchester spur thru Colchester and Hebron, including very scenic Raymond Brook Marsh area. Expect wet conditions. Pizza stop after. Meet CPL, Exit 16, (Route 149) off Route 2, Colchester. Steady rain cancels. If doubt, call by 12:15 pm. L: Steve Braciak (860-267-4371). Sunday, September 7, 8:30 a.m., PSF Hike, Algonquin State Forest. Explore the environment of the Kitchell Natural Area Preserve from an old growth tupelo swamp to a sedge-covered hilltop. This area is rich in natural history and had a diverse early human history. About 5½ miles, with some steep up and down sections. Estimated time about 4½ hours. Meet at the entrance to the PSF Matthies Grove Picnic Area, on East River Rd. Bring water, lunch, and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. L: Walt Landgraf Sunday, September 7, 2003, 1:30 p.m., SG Hike, Geology-of-the-Giant Hike Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the park entrance. The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile in from Whitney Avenue, on the left-hand side of the street. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. Please do not bring pets. The hike is open to the public, and there is no fee. Sunday, September 14, 8:30 a.m., PSF Hike, Simsbury Land Trust Cathles Property Explore the environment of a bog, swamp, glacial esker, and the unique natural history of the trap rock ridges. The focus of this hike will be CT Geology. About 6½ miles, with some steep up and down sections. Estimated time about 5½ hours. Meet at the entrance to the PSF Matthies Grove Picnic Area on East River Rd. Bring water, lunch, and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. Hike approx. 6 mi on Mainline and Orange Dot Trails from Marsh Rd. to Rt. 69. Mile of Ledges; Heminway Lookout; Sessions Woods. Potential post-hike surprise. Meet jct. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 8:45 a.m., Unofficial FCE Hike, Mattatuck Trail, Litchfield Meet at Burlington Commons (intersection of Rts 4 and 69) .
