OCTOBER 2004 SCHEDULE

Thursday, Oct. 7,  8:45 a.m., FCE, Found Land, Avon

From Unionville Center: take Rt 177 (Lovely St) into Avon, take a left onto Northgate Rd., a right onto Northington Rd., and drive a short distance and park in the lot on the left. We will combine Found Land with some other trails in this area.  L: Marie Coons 

Tuesday, Oct. 12, 8 am, FCE Unofficial, AT, Mt. Greylock, Adams, MA

This is going to be a long day with 7 long miles of hiking. Meet at Marandino's and we will not return until between 6 & 7 pm. Pack plenty of water, food, and layers. The car spot will be time consuming.  L: Marie Coons

Thursday, Oct. 14,  8:45 a.m., FCE, Tunxis Trail, Burlington

Follow Rt 4 through Unionville, up the hill into Burlington, take a left onto Belden Rd.(across from the town hall), right onto George Washington Turnpike, left onto Cornwall Rd., park on the right about half way up. Anticipate an 11:30 am return time from this woods and view hike.  L: Marie Coons

Sunday, October 17, 9 a.m., PSF, Granville State Forest.

Waterfalls, old foundations, beautiful natural areas.  Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) at People’s State Forest. Bring water, lunch, and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. We will be walking about 4 miles of moderate terrain and the estimated time is 4.5 hours.  L: Walt Landgraf

Sunday, October 17, 1:30 pm, SG, East End Hike and Letter-Boxing Event

Meet at the bulletin board at the park entrance. The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, on the left-hand side, about ¼ mile in from Whitney Avenue (Rt. 10). Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired and dress for the weather. Please do not bring pets. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 8 am, FCE Unofficial, AT, Mt. Greylock to North Adams, MA   Postponed due to weather -- to be rescheduled

Thursday, Oct. 21,  8:45 a.m., FCE, Tunxis Trail, New Hartford

Take Rt 44 west through Canton, right onto Rt 219, follow for a number of miles and soon after the 2nd intersection with Ratlum Rd., park in the pull out on the right. We will include the Indian Council Caves on this beautiful hike. Anticipate an 11:30 am return time.  L: Marie Coons

Sunday, October 24, 1:30 pm, SG, Fall Foliage Hike

Hike follows the Annual Meeting of the SGPA.  Meet at the bulletin board at the park entrance. The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 8 am, FCE Unofficial, AT, Mt. Greylock to North Adams, MA  This is the hike that was rained out on Oct. 19

Thursday, Oct. 28,  8:45 a.m., FCE, Lamentation Mt., Meriden

From Rt 9 in Berlin, drive south on 5-15. When Rt 5 splits from Rt 15, take Rt. 5 south (bear right) onto N. Broad St. Then, take a left onto Westfield Rd. (about 2nd left), bear left at the intersection, follow past a golf course and turn left into the parking lot of Giuffrida Park. We will try a car spot for this hike of miles of views.  L: Marie Coons

Saturday, Oct. 30, 9:45 a.m., SC, Foliage Hike. Cockaponset State Forest

Crunch through the leaves on a loop trail with lunch by Pataconk Lake in Chester.  Medium pace 5.7 miles over mostly easy terrain.  Bring boots, lunch Water.  Rain date 10/31.  Leave from the Park & Ride lot at exit 6 off Rt. 9 in Chester.  No need to register.  Questions call L: Ken Selling (860-344-9774)
