SEPTEMBER 2004 SCHEDULE Sunday, September 12, 1:30 pm, SG, Geology-of-the-Giant Hike Meet at the bulletin board at the park entrance. The Sleeping Giant Park is on Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, on the left-hand side, about ¼ mile in from Whitney Avenue (Rt. 10). Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired and dress for the weather. Please do not bring pets. The hikes are open to the public, and there is no fee. CL: Dan Zibello, Barbara & Irwin Beitch et al. Sunday, September 19, 9 a.m., PSF, Upper Beaver Meadow. Explore an old mill site, house sites, farms, and clay beds. Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) at People’s State Forest. Bring water and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. We will be walking about 2 miles of easy terrain and the estimated time is 2½ hours. L: Walt Landgraf Tuesday, September 21, 9 a.m., FCE Unofficial, Metacomet Trail, Farmington. Meet in the back parking lot of the West Hartford reservoir off Rt. 4. We will carpool from there to the start at the Farmington Reservoir off Rt. 6. There will be a bit of shuffling to get us all back to our own cars but this is Marie's famous "Real Estate Walk!" [See the home of 50-cent and other high rollers along the way from Rt. 6 to Rt 4 and beyond.] Bring hearty snacks and water. Estimate return to cars by noon. Please call 860-404-0290 and specify Course #04F1301 to register for this series of 8 official hikes (approx. 4 - 6 miles each) + ?? "unofficials." We will carpool to the start of the hike.. If rain, dress for the weather. Today: Talcott Mt., Avon Saturday, September 25, 9 a.m. PSF, Soapstone Quarry in Nepaug State Forest. Explore how Native Americans made bowls of soapstone, over 30 bowl making areas can be observed in the quarry face. We will also visit a rich quartz and mica site. A great area for local geology. CL: Dick Majka, Chris Fagan et al Tuesday, Sept. 28, 8:30 am, FCE Unofficial, M-M-M Trail, Amherst, MA Postponed due to weather (remnants of hurricane) - Date TBA Meet in the upper parking lot of Sperry Park in Avon on Rt 10-202 about a ¼ mile north of Rt 44 and just south of the Avon Wellness Center. This does not sound as difficult as the Seven Sisters. Anticipate a 4:30 pm return time from this 6 mile hike. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Sept. 30, 8:45 a.m., FCE, Trails off Breezy Hill Rd., Canton Follow Rt 44 west, take a right onto Indian Hill Rd. (about the 5th right past Saybrook Fish House), follow this road (even as it curves to the left) until it intersects with Breezy Hill Rd., take a right and park a short distance up. We will combine some Canton Land Trust trails for a nice woodsy hike. L: Marie Coons
