APRIL 2005 SCHEDULE Saturday, April 2, 10:30 AM, SC Friendly Dog Hike Sierra Club hikes are free to everyone...you don't have to be a member and no advanced registration necessary! Belding Trout Area in Vernon. A 1.5 hour hike with an easy but steady pace on moderate terrain. Rain cancels. Meet at the 7/11 on Rte. 30 by Vernon Avenue and the NE Pizza Restaurant. Access via I-84 East to exit 66, Tunnel Road. End of ramp turn left to immediate stop sign. Turn left again onto Bolton Road. Go ahead 1/2 mile to light where white church is opposite. That is Rte 30. Turn right onto Rte. 30 and climb hill 1/2 mile. 7/11 ahead on left. Call Renee only to confirm if weather is questionable. 860-646-5762 Snow we go; ice we don't! No smoking, no cell phones, please. Sunday, April 3, 1:30pm. SG, History-of-the-Giant Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, April 5, 8:45 a.m., FCE-U, Mattabesett Trail, Middletown Waterproof boots recommended. Meet in the commuter parking lot at the corner of Town Farm Rd. and Rt. 4 and we will carpool to continue our trek on the Mattabesett Trail. We only have 83 more miles to hike on the M-M-M Trail in MA/NH to reach the summit of Mt. Monadnock, so many of the unofficial hikes will be on this trail. Return time estimate: 2 pm. L: Marie Coons Thursday, April 7, 9 a.m., FCE Hikes Begin First meeting at Farmington CPL, Rt. 4 at Town Farm Rd. Please call 860-404-0290 and specify Course #05S1301 to register for this series of 8 official hikes (approx. 4 - 6 miles each) + ?? "unofficials." We will carpool to the start of the hike which will be at Found Land, Avon. If rain, dress appropriately. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, April 12, 8:45 a.m., FCE-U, Mattabesett Trail, Middletown Meet in the commuter parking lot on the corner of Rt 4 and Town Farm Rd. in Farmington. This hike will be about 7.5 miles long and include the Seven Falls Trail and Bear Hill Loop. Anticipate some mud along the way. This will complete the Mattabesett Trail! We should be back to the cars about 3 pm. This hike is on trails I have not hiked before. L: Marie Coons Thursday, April 14, 8:45 a.m., FCE, Metacomet Trail, Simsbury Meet at Penwood State Park off Rt 185 near the town line between Simsbury and Bloomfield. From the intersection of Rts 10 and 44, follow Rt 10 north to a right onto Rt 185 and the park is on the left as you gain elevation. Return to the cars by 11 am. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, April 19, 8:30 a.m., FCE-U, M-M-M Trail, Granby/Belchertown, MA We will continue our trek on the M-M-M trail-we have about 80 miles left to reach Mt. Monadnock! Meet in the parking lot of the International Skating Center on Rt 10 (about ½ mile north of the intersection with Rt 315) in Simsbury. This hike will be almost 7 miles so anticipate a 4:30 pm return time. This hike is on trails I have not hiked before. Take Rt 84 west to exit 28, take a right off exit ramp, and a left into the commuter parking lot. We will carpool from here. Anticipate an 11:45 am return time to the cars. L: Marie Coons Thursday, April 28, 8:45 a.m., FCE, Simsbury Town Forest/Ethel Walkers, Simsbury Follow Rt 167 north (Bushy Hill Rd.) past Simsbury Commons and after the light at the intersection of Rt 167 and Wildwood Rd, take your 2nd left onto Woodhaven Dr. Go to the end and park on the right of the circle.
