FEBRUARY 2005 SCHEDULE Tuesday, Feb. 1, 8:45 am-- FCE Unofficial, EWS/Town Forest, Simsbury Meet at Borders in the Simsbury Commons and we will car pool to the start of this snowshoe to explore a different section from our last visit here. Anticipate an 11 am return time.. L: Marie Coons Saturday, Feb. 5, 10:30 AM, SC Friendly Dog Hike Sierra Club hikes are free to everyone...you don't have to be a member and no advanced registration necessary! Belding Trout Area in Vernon. A 1.5 hour hike with an easy but steady pace on moderate terrain. Rain cancels. Meet at the 7/11 on Rte. 30 by Vernon Avenue and the NE Pizza Restaurant. Access via I-84 East to exit 66, Tunnel Road. End of ramp turn left to immediate stop sign. Turn left again onto Bolton Road. Go ahead 1/2 mile to light where white church is opposite. That is Rte 30. Turn right onto Rte. 30 and climb hill 1/2 mile. 7/11 ahead on left. Call Renee only to confirm if weather is questionable. 860-646-5762 Snow we go; ice we don't! No smoking, no cell phones, please. Sunday, Feb. 6, 1:00 PM, Simsbury Land Trust Snowshoe Hike Three showshoe hikes starting at the picnic area of McLean Game Refuge on Barndoor Hills Rd. All will end no later than 3pm. One will be mildly strenuous for children. The second, more advanced, will be for adults. The third will be led by photographer Hunter Neal. A limited number of snowshoes will be available. To sign up for a hike or reserve a set of showshoes, call 651-8773. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 8:45 am-- FCE Unofficial, Penwood--North Section, Simsbury/Bloomfield Meet at the east end of Wintonbury Rd. in Simsbury. One way to get there is to follow Rts 10/202 north, take a right onto Rt. 185, a left just after the bridge onto East Weatogue St., follow even as it changes its name to Terry's Plain Rd., and Wintonbury Rd. is on the right after Hunting Ridge Dr., follow Wintonbury Rd. to the end. Anticipate an 11 am return time.. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, Feb. 15, 8:45 am-- FCE Unofficial, AOF Woods, Avon Meet in the lot off of Thompson Rd. next to the rails-to-trails at 8:45 am for this exploration. From Unionville, drive Rt 167 West Avon Rd. towards Avon, at the three-way stop sign take a left (staying on West Avon Rd.), then take the first right onto Thompson Rd., follow past the new school, and the lot is on the right after the field before you go over the rails-to-trails. Anticipate an 11 am return time. L: Marie Coons. Sunday, February 20, 1:30pm. SG, Winter Tree Identification Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 8:45 am-- FCE Unofficial, Roraback, Harwinton Meet in the Burlington Commons which is at the intersection of Rt. 4 and Rt.69 in Burlington. Anticipate an 11:45 am return time to the cars after we explore this wonderful wooded area. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Feb. 24 8:45 am- FCE Unofficial, Roaring Brook Nature Center from Onion Mt, Simsbury to Canton Meet promptly at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton for this adventure. We will then carpool to West Mountain Rd., and do a cross mountain bushwhack back to the nature center. Please have appropriate footwear (waterproof boots and snowshoes).
