JULY 2005 SCHEDULE Friday, July 1, 8:45 am, LH, Tunxis Trail - New Hartford/Ski sundown area Meet at Marandino's market, Rt. 44 opposite Satan's Kingdom recreation area, New Hartford. Bring plenty of water, bug stuff, etc. Some may plan to eat lunch in New Hartford village and see "the dogs". Bring $$$ if you do this! Estimated end of walk around 11:30. L: Diana Meyer Thursday, July 7, 8:45 am LH Tunxis, Burlington Rhodies not ready -- postponed to July 12 The giant rhododendrons at Pachaug are blooming late this year. So the hike has been moved up to next Tuesday. We will still meet at Farmington CPL, Rt. 4 at Town Farms Rd. [Optional: can meet on Scoville Rd at Rt. 69, opposite Lamson Corner Cemetery about 9:20.] We will hike a 4.6 mile section of the Tunxis Trail, which will include Devil's Kitchen. Bring plenty of water, lunch/snacks and bug spray. Return to cars about 1:30. L: Len Berton Saturday, July 9, 10:30 AM, SC Friendly Dog Hike Sierra Club hikes are free to everyone...you don't have to be a member and no advanced registration necessary! Belding Trout Area in Vernon. A 1.5 hour hike with an easy but steady pace on moderate terrain. Rain cancels. Meet at the 7/11 on Rte. 30 by Vernon Avenue and the NE Pizza Restaurant. Access via I-84 East to exit 66, Tunnel Road. End of ramp turn left to immediate stop sign. Turn left again onto Bolton Road. Go ahead 1/2 mile to light where white church is opposite. That is Rte 30. Turn right onto Rte. 30 and climb hill 1/2 mile. 7/11 ahead on left. Call Renee only to confirm if weather is questionable. 860-646-5762 No smoking, no cell phones, please. Sunday, July 10, 9 am, PSF, Walk to the Soapstone Quarry in Peoples. Visit the ancient quarry in Peoples. Learn about the 1940s Yale excavation, which revealed Native Americans used the site for 3,000 plus years. Charcoal hearths, a collier's hut and forest ecology will be explored along the trail. Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) at Peoples State Forest bring water and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. We will be walking about 1 mile of easy terrain and estimated time is 2 hours. L: Walt Landgraf Tuesday, July 12, 8:45 am, LH, Pachaug State Forest & Rhododendron Sanctuary Expect giant rhodies to be in full bloom. Meet at Farmington CPL, Rt. 4 at Town Farms Rd. We will carpool to Voluntown. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks and bug spray. The hike will be about 6 miles on the Nehantic and Pachaug trails, and will include Mt. Misery (elevation 410'). The hike is rated B3B, "5.3 miles of many different terrains starting from Beach Pond to Shetucket Turnpike. Some strenuous parts." Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Sunday, July 17, Sun 9 a.m. PSF, Hike to Upper Beaver Meadow. Explore walls, an old mill site, house sites, farms, geologic history and clay beds. Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) at People's State Forest bring water and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. We will be walking about 2 miles of easy terrain and the estimated time is 2.5 hours. L: Walt Landgraf Thursday, July 21, 8:30 am, AMC, Bennett's Pond and Pine Mountain, Ridgefield If you would like to carpool, meet at Burlington CPL (Rt. 4 at Library Lane, next to Little League field) for the 1¼-hour drive. AMC membership not required. The hike is rated B3BC, Some strenuous parts. Approx. 7 miles, moderate pace, mainly flat but steep climb up Pine Mtn. We will follow trails along a pond with lilies, ducks and swans, then climb Pine Mtn. for lunch at the top. Weather forecast is 70's/80's with humidity dropping by noon.
