OCTOBER 2005 SCHEDULE Tuesday, Oct. 4, 8 a.m. FCE-U, MMM Trail, Northfield, MA to Warwick, MA Meet in the parking lot of the International Skating Center in Simsbury for this 8.5 mile hike. Anticipate a 6 pm return time. Some of us have hiked this before, but others missed the opportunity. This is a good hike to help get in shape for the next two MMM hikes. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Oct. 6, 8:45 am, FCE, Penwood-Metacomet, Simsbury Take Rt 10 north through Avon and into Simsbury. Take a right onto Rt 185 and your first left onto East Weatogue Rd. Follow this even when it changes its name to Terry's Plain Rd. Take a right onto Wintonbury Rd. and park up the road to the dead end. We will be hiking a loop with some incline the first mile and a beautiful view. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, Oct. 11, 7:30 a.m. FCE-U, MMM Trail, Richmond, NH to Troy, NH postponed to 10/18 due to flooding in NH Meet in the parking lot of the International Skating Center in Simsbury for this 10.6 mile hike. Anticipate a 7:30 pm return time. Pack lots of food and liquid. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Oct. 13, 8:45 a.m. FCE-U, Thursday Oct. 13 Naugatuck Trail postponed due to flooding & heavy rain Meet in the commuter parking lot next to the Little League field on Library Lane off Rt 4 in Burlington to carpool to this 6.5-mile hike, including a new section that's not in the bluebook yet. I estimate we will be back to the cars about 3 pm. L: Marie Coons, CL: Len Berton Sunday, October 16, 1:30pm. SG, East End Hike On seldom-visited trails, including a special letter-boxing event. All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 7:30 a.m. FCE-U, MMM Trail, Richmond, NH to Troy, NH postponed due to potential high water in streams we need to cross, plus L's illness. Will be rescheduled -- see below Meet in the parking lot of the International Skating Center in Simsbury for this 10.6 mile hike. Anticipate a 7:30 pm return time. Pack lots of food and liquid. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Oct. 20, 8:45 am, FCE, Tunxis Trail, Burlington Follow Rt 4 through Unionville, up the hill into Burlington, take a left onto Belden Rd. (across from the town hall), right onto George Washington Turnpike, left onto Cornwall Rd., park on the right about half-way up the road. Anticipate an 11:30 am return time from this woods and view hike. L: Marie Coons Sunday, October 23, 1:30pm. SG, Fall Foliage Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 8:45 a.m. FCE-U, Windsor Locks Canal Walk postponed due to flooding & heavy rain Meet at Farmington CPL, Rt. 4 at Town Farms Rd. We will carpool to Dexter Plaza, Main St., Windsor Locks. If people wish to meet there, that's OK too - 9:15 A.M. We have to spot cars, so we will leave cars there and travel in 1 or 2 cars to Canal Rd., the state boat launching area to begin the walk. It is a level walk along the CT River and could be quite interesting with all the rain lately and hopefully we will have some fall colors by then. Return about noon. L: Jane Macomber Thursday, Oct. 27, 8:45 am, FCE, Canton Land Trust, Charlotte Craig & Ted Wright Trails Follow Rt 44 west to Canton, take a right onto Rt 179 north, a left onto Barbourtown Rd. (very skinny and curvy), and follow it until it intersects with Breezy Hill Rd. Take a left onto Breezy Hill Rd. and park just before the road becomes unpaved. We will get two viewing spots on this beautiful hike. L: Marie Coons
