JANUARY 2006 SCHEDULE Sunday, January 1, 2006, 1:30pm. SG, New Year’s Day Hike Start the new year “on the right foot”. All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 9:15 am, FCE-U, McLean Game Refuge, Granby Meet at the main gate on Rt 10/202. The plan is to join up with the East of the River AMC group for this hike/snowshoe so bring a large snack or lunch. I am not sure of the return time; they usually hike for longer than 2 hours. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Jan. 12, 9am, LH, Fisher Meadows, Avon Meet at Fisher Meadows parking lot, Old Farms Rd., just W of Rt. 10, with snowshoes (or not). Expect to tromp about 1 1/2 hrs or until hungry. Return around 11:00AM. L: Diana Meyer Tuesday, Jan.17, 8:45 am, FCE-U, Old Farms Woods, Avon Meet in the Rails-to-Trails parking area on Thompson Rd. in Avon. Anticipate an 11:30 am return time. L: Marie Coons Thursday, Jan. 19, 9am, LH, Shade Swamp Meet on New Britain Ave., Farmington, opposite Hamilton Sundstrom (formerly "Hamilton Standard"). Parking available on north side of the street about 1/2 mile west (in) from Rt. 6. Hopefully I'll be there pulled off to the side of the road indicating the spot. (The usual parking off Rt. 6 by the Smokey Bear sign is not plowed and the gate is locked.) We'll bushwack into the woods from the parking spot. Expect about 1 1/2 hr. walk or "shoe". L: Diana Meyer Tuesday, Jan. 24, 8:45 am, FCE-U, Canton Land Trust, Canton Meet in the parking lot adjacent to Borders in the Simsbury Commons. Anticipate an 11:30 am return time. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, Jan. 31, 8:45 am, FCE-U, Ethel Walkers/Town Forest, Simsbury Cancelled due to weather concerns. See 2/14 Meet on Woodhaven Dr. in Simsbury. From the intersection of Rt. 44 and 167, take Rt 167 north and Woodhaven is the second left past the firehouse. Follow the road to the end. We should be back to the cars by 11 am. L: Marie Coons |
