MARCH 2006 SCHEDULE

Tue. March 7, 9 am,  LH,  Nepaug Dam and Reservoir, Canton

Meet in  the parking lot next to the antiques bldg. near the rails-to-trails bridge in Collinsville.  We will carpool to the trailhead.  About 3 miles, and expect to be back by 11:30.  L: Len Berton

Saturday, March 11th, 10:30 a.m., SC, Dog Friendly Hike, Hebron  

Hikes are scheduled to take place at Gay City State Park if the trails are clear of excessive snow or any ice. Gay City meeting site is in front of the park entrance on Rt. 85. Moderate terrain slow pace with some hills and tree roots to walk over - 1.5 to 2 hrs depending on conditions.

Snow / ice conditions move the hike to Bolton Notch Pond with a meeting at Shady Glen Restaurant at 10:30 a.m. Slow pace on an easy terrain, a rail to trail graded bed. Directions: I-84 east to I-384 east exit 5, Rte. 85. End of ramp go left up and down hill to light at Rte. 6. Turn left onto Rte. 6, restaurant is ahead on left.
Rain cancels hikes.

Questions about weather on the hiking date, call Renee from 9:00am to 10:00am at 860-646-5762 to confirm site and if hike is on. Please wear hiking boots; it's slippery in there!  Friendly dogs welcome on all hikes and can run free, but please bring leashes in case we meet others on trail and bring along cleanup bags. Please, no cell phone use or smoking on the trails.

Tue. March 14, 8:45 am,  LH, Peak Mountain, Metacomet Trail, Granby postponed to Wed. Mar. 15 due to weather conditions

Meet at either Borders/Walgreen's parking area in Simsbury Commons at 8:45 or 9:10 at the hike start at Rt. 20 and Newgate Rd. Parking in pull-outs along east side of road. We'll go up and back. Expected return to cars around 11:15.  L: Diana Meyer

Sunday, March 19, 11:00am. SG, Almost Spring Hikers’ Hike

A strenuous hike over rough terrain - FOR EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY!  All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please.

Tue. March 21, 9 am,  LH,  Metacomet Trail, Bradley Mtn., Plainville

Meet in parking lot of Big Y Supermarket on Rt. 372, Plainville (opposite Lowe's, next to the VW dealership). We'll carpool from there to the trailhead. Up and back. Expected return to cars around 11:30. (Do keep an eye on the weather. Heavy snow cancels.)  L: Diana Meyer

Thur. March 23, 9 am,  LH, Hedgehog Trail - Simsbury Land Trust, West Simsbury

Meet either at trailhead on cul-de-sac at end of Saddle Ridge Road at 9:15 AM or at Borders/Walgreens parking lot in Simsbury Commons at 9 AM.  Expected return to cars around 11:30. L: Diana Meyer

Tue. March 28, 9 am,  LH,  Indian Council Caves, Barkhamsted 

Meet at Marandino's market parking lot, Rt. 44, New Hartford (opposite Satan's Kingdom parking lot entrance).  We'll carpool to the trailhead, and go up and back on the Tunxis trail. Bring snacks and water.  Estimated return to cars around 11:30AM.  L: Diana Meyer

Thur. March 30, 9 am,  LH, Ventres and Tunxis Trails, Burlington

We'll explore the recently completed new trail in the Fiske H. Ventres Birding Area off Taine Mountain Rd.  [For more info and pictures, click here.]  Then we will take the blue Tunxis up to Perry's Lookout and circle back to Taine Mtn. Rd.  Meet at the Farmington River Trail parking lot off Rt. 4 just S of the Rt. 179 traffic light in Burlington.  We'll carpool to the trailheads from there.  Bring snacks and water.  Return to cars around noon.  L: Len Berton
