MAY 2006 SCHEDULE Tues. May 2, 8:45 a.m., LH, Litchfield Daffodils/Topsmead Meet Stop & Shop parking lot, Unionville. Alternative meeting place: 9:10 at Burlington CPL (Library Lane off Rt. 4, next to Little League field). Carpool out to see daffodils in Litchfield, then hiking at Topsmead State Forest. Easy, gentle hike. Bring lunch and we'll picnic at Topsmead. Back early pm. Probably around 4 miles of hiking. L: Jane Macomber Thursday, May 4, 8:45 a.m., FCE, Bradley Mt., Metacomet Trail, Plainville/Southington This section has been rerouted since we last hiked it. Meet in the lot across from Rogers' Orchard on Long Bottom Rd in Southington. One way to drive here from Farmington is to follow Rt 10 south, bear left on Cooke St., left on Rt 372, right on Crooked St., right on Woodford Ave., first left on Ledge Rd., follow Ledge as it changes its name to Shuttle Meadow, and then a right on Long Bottom Rd. Give yourself time for a scenic drive. L: Marie Coons Saturday, May 6, 9 a.m., PSF, Annual Flower Walk, Barkhamsted On the Buck Trail in American Legion State Forest where over 50 species of wild flowers have been identified. Explore the natural history of these plants, their methods of pollination, Native American and colonial use. Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) at People's State Forest; bring water and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. About 1.2 miles of easy terrain -- estimated time 2 hours. L: Walt Landgraf Sunday, May 7, 8:00am. SG, Early Bird Watchers’ Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Sunday, May 7, 2006, 10:30am, AMC, Totally Tunxis Redux 2 (C3C) Last (hopefully) in series of hikes to cover extensive Tunxis Trail system. Hike approx. 4 miles from Legeyt Rd. to Pine Mt. Rd. in Barkhamsted/Hartland. Optional loop to visit Indian Council Caves. Possible views of Springfield from Pine Mt. Call L for mtg. place. Special post-hike surprise to celebrate end of series. May 9, 8:45 a.m. FCE U, Shenipsit Trail, Valley Falls Park to I-84, Vernon Meet in the commuter parking lot on the corner of Town Farm Rd. and Rt. 4 (Farmington Ave.). Today we will hike about 5 miles so anticipate a 2 pm return time. L: Marie Coons Thursday, May 11, 8:45 a.m., FCE, McLean Game Refuge, Granby Meet in the main parking lot on Rts 10/202 in Granby. From Avon, follow Rts 10/202 north through Simsbury and the entrance to the Refuge is on the left soon after you enter Granby. L: Marie Coons Tues. May 16, 8:45 a.m. FCE U, Case Mountain Trails, Manchester Meet in the commuter parking lot on the corner of Town Farm Rd. and Rt. 4 (Farmington Ave.). We will hike about 5 miles on this trail system so anticipate a 2 pm return time to the cars. L: Marie Coons Thursday, May 18, 8:45 a.m., FCE, Roraback Wildlife Management Area, Harwinton We will hike some of the trails in the woods and along water in this beautiful area. Meet on South Rd. in the lot by the old hunting lodge. Drive west through Burlington on Rt 4, take a left on South Rd. (about your third left past Rt 72), follow South Rd. for a few miles and the lot will be on your left. L: Marie Coons Tues. May 23, 8:45 a.m. FCE U, Case Mountain Trails, Manchester Meet in the commuter parking lot on the corner of Town Farm Rd. and Rt. 4 (Farmington Ave.). We will hike about 5 miles of different trails on this mountain than our previous visit. We should be back to the cars by 2 pm. L: Marie Coons Thursday,

Simsbury/Bloomfield Tues. May 30, 8:45 a.m. FCE U, Shenipsit Trail, Soapstone Mt. to northern end, Somers/Stafford Meet in the International Skating Center parking lot on Rt.10, Simsbury. 3+ miles.
