HOME | APRIL 2007 SCHEDULE Tuesday, April 3, 9am, LH – Huckleberry Hill, Avon Park in lot behind HH School on Huckleberry Hill Rd. just S of Lofgren Rd. (School has been converted to condos or something.) Done before noon. Bring snacks & water. L: Jane Macomber Thursday, April 5, 8:45 am, FCE - Tunxis Loop/Sessions Woods, Burlington 9+ weekly hikes begin. First meeting is at Sessions Woods, Rt. 69, 3+ miles south of the intersection with Rt 4, Burlington. Please call FCE at 404-0290 and register for Course #07S1301: "Hikes", or click here to enroll on-line. Distances will be about 4 - 6 miles, with back-to-cars goal before noon. Today we will walk a loop on the mainline and orange-dot Tunxis Trail. Then for those with remaining time and energy, we will visit the Sessions Woods duck blind, waterfall, and fire tower. Also see Hiking Notes. L: Len Berton Tuesday, April 10, 8:45am, FCE-U – Tunxis Loop, Burlington This 6-mile loop includes the main line, red-dot & purple-dot Tunxis trails. We will climb up to Perry's Lookout on Taine Mtn., climb Wildcat Mtn, and up Stone Rd. Meet on Ryan's Way: turn S off Rt. 4 at the blinker on Punch Brook Rd. (opposite Barnes Hill), which is about 0.5 mile W of Rt. 179 traffic light. Ryan's Way is 2nd right - park a short way down alongside wooded area. Bring snacks/lunch/water. Return est. 1:00 pm. L: Len Berton Thursday, April 12, 8:45am, FCE – Farmington River Walk, Collinsville/Burlington/Unionville Postponed to 4/19 due to weather Meet at the dirt parking lot next to the antiques building in Collinsville, corner of Bridge and Front Sts. If no spaces there, there is a paved municipal parking lot across Front St. adjacent to the Collinsville post office. We will walk the very level rails-to-trails down to Unionville and back. There is a half-mile northern extension of this trail we might add on depending on the time, and then optional lunch at the delicious LaSalle Market. to April 24 We will do the section from Palisades Pkwy. over Bear Mt. to the Bear Mt. Bridge on the NY Appalachian Trail. Meet in Burlington at the commuter lot adjacent to the Burlington Library/Little League field on Library Lane. The hike is 8.2 miles and we should be back to the Bear Mountain Bridge by 4:30 pm and Burlington by 7:30 pm (but remember, be flexible). Please read this list and pack accordingly, and of course bring plenty of water, snacks and food. [Other info: we have hiked 50.9 miles so far in NY and have 37.4 miles to go. After we complete Bear Mountain, we have 4 hikes left in NY (this will also bring us into NJ a bit). The AT in NJ is only 72 miles.] L: Marie Coons Thursday, April 19, 8:45am,
FCE – Farmington River Walk,
Collinsville/Burlington/Unionville This hike was
originally scheduled for April 12. The Tunxis Nature Center Connector hike
has been moved to June 7. Meet at the dirt parking lot next to the antiques building in Collinsville, corner of Bridge and Front Sts. If no spaces there, there is a paved municipal parking lot across Front St. adjacent to the Collinsville post office. We will walk the very level rails-to-trails down to Unionville and back. SG, Special Earth Day Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. We will carpool to the park, where we will do the Testone Boulder, Fadior Spring, Beaver Pond and Fyler trails. L: Len Berton Sunday, April 29, 1:30pm. SG, Spring Wildflower Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt.
