Park, NY note earlier time Meet in Burlington at the commuter lot adjacent to the Burlington Library/Little League field on Library Lane. This hike is 8.8 miles so anticipate a return time of about 8 pm to Burlington (but remember, be flexible). Please read this list and pack accordingly, and of course bring plenty of water, snacks and food. . L: Marie Coons Tuesday, May 1, 9am, LH – Daffodils and Topsmead - Litchfield Meet at Stop&Shop parking lot, Unionville (west side). We'll carpool westward to that famous daffodil place and then proceed to Topsmead State Park and wander around their trails (can be very swampy) -- pretty much level walking. Bring hearty snack or lunch and water as unsure of how much time this will take. Rough estimate is return to cars in Unionville around 1:30PM. L: Diana Meyer Thursday, May 3, 8:45am, FCE – McLean Game Refuge, Granby Meet in the main parking lot on Rt.10/202 in Granby, about 1.5 mi. N of the Simsbury line. We will walk a big loop over a variety of trails. L: Len Berton Saturday, May 5, 9 am, PSF, Annual Flower Walk, American Legion SF, Barkhamsted Walk on the Buck Trail in American Legion State Forest where over 50 species of wild flowers have been identified. Explore the natural history of these plants, their methods of pollination, Native American and colonial use. Meet at Matthies Grove (main picnic area) on E. River Rd. at Peoples State Forest. Bring water and insect spray. Heavy rain cancels. We will be walking about 1.2 miles of easy terrain and estimated time is 2 hours. Approximate return to cars is noon. L: Walt Landgraf Saturday, May 5, 9 am, BLT: Burlington Land Trust, Burlington Meet at the BLT Trail Head, Johnnycake Mountain Road, 2 Miles South of Rt 4. We will explore the Tunxis Blue Trail. This 90 minute, 2-mile hike will provide some interesting historical facts about the area. Some moderate inclines; a few short, rocky declines; a brook to jump and some mud to circumvent. Some great views and a lot of variety. Find out where the name Johnnycake come from, and what is that tower with the red light? Call leader at 673-0340 to register. L: Karen Geitz, a BLT director. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, May 8, 9am, LH – Nature Trails, Hammonassett SP - Madison Meet at Stop&Shop parking lot, Unionville (west side). Pack a lunch, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen & lots of water. It's predicted to be 80 degrees. Guesstimated return time around 3:00PM, depending on how far we walk along the beach. L: Diana Meyer Wednesday, May 9, 7pm, Landgraf Slide Presentation, Burlington Library Located beyond the commuter parking lot and the Little League field on Library Lane, just west of the Congregational Church on Rt. 4. Walt Landgraf of Peoples State Forest will speak at the Annual Meeting of The Burlington Library Association. His topic will be "Parks and Forests of Northwestern Connecticut" which should be very interesting. Public welcome. No charge. Refreshments. Thursday, May 10, 8:45am, FCE – Rt. 202 – Tunxis Trail to Satan’s Kingdom, New Hartford Park at Satan's Kingdom Recreation area on Rt. 44 just W of the Farmington River bridge in New Hartford, NW of Canton. We will carpool to the start of the hike near Rt. 202, and this time we will find the Tipping Rock loop trail we missed last season. L: Len Berton Sunday, May 13, 8:00am. SG, Early Bird Watchers’ Hike All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Tuesday, May 15, 7:30 am FCE-U-Appalachian Trail--Sterling Forest, NY Meet in Burlington at the commuter lot adjacent to the Burlington Library/Little League field on Library Lane. L: Marie Coons Tuesday, May 15, 9am, LH – Metacomet & Newgate Wildlife trails, East Granby Meet @ Unionville's Stop&Shop to carpool to the Rt. 20 trailhead to do up and back along the Metacomet Ridge on Peak Mtn. Then over to Old Newgate Prison area for lunch & some of their wildlife trails. Bring water, snacks & lunch. Guesstimated return around 2:30PM L: Diana Meyer Thursday, May 17, 8:45am, FCE – Metacomet Trail, Plainville/Farmington Meet on Pinnacle Rd. opposite Reservoir Rd. (off Rt. 6 in Farmington just west of the Tomasso gravel operation). Park on shoulders and along road, staying well clear of driveways. We will carpool to Rt. 372 in Plainville and hike back. This trail has at least 6 magnificent overlooks, highlighted by Pinnacle Rock with views in all directions. Then we will pass Will Warren’s den which many will remember from previous seasons. L: Len Berton Tuesday, May 22, 9am, FCE-U - Sleeping Giant SP, Hamden Meet at Farmington CPL next to golf course on Rt. 4 to carpool to the park. Expect to do some of the Quinnipiac blue trail, one of the Giant's more strenuous hikes, with return on one of the easiest. Total distance about 5.5 miles. Bring water, snacks & lunch. Guesstimated return around 2:30PM. L: Len Berton Thursday, May 24, 8:45am, FCE – John Muir Trail, Torrington Meet at the Burr Pond boat launch parking lot. Take Rt. 4 W through Burlington & Harwinton, and stay on 4 when it turns right. In about 1.3 mi., turn R on Torringford St. (Rt. 183). In about 4.3 mi. turn L on Greenwoods Rd. When you cross Winsted Rd., name changes to Mountain Rd. Take 2nd L park entrance to boat launch pkg lot. From Simsbury/Avon area, you can take Rt. 44, bear L onto Rt. 202 into Torrington, and R on Rt.183 (just after Walmart on L) and then as above. L: Len Berton Tuesday, May 29, 7:30 am FCE-U-Appalachian Trail--NY/NJ State Line Cancelled due to bad karma. Some things are just not meant to be. New date to be determined. Meet in Burlington at 7:30 am at the commuter lot adjacent to the Burlington Library/Little League field on Library Lane. This hike is 9.5 miles so anticipate a return time of about 8:30 pm to Burlington (but remember, be flexible). We will finish the NY section of the AT and start the NJ section on this hike! Please read this list and pack accordingly, and of course bring plenty of water, snacks, and food. L: Marie Coons Thursday, May 31, 8:45am, FCE – Tunxis Trails, Burlington region Meet at end of Cornwall Rd., Burlington. From Rt. 4, S on Belden Rd. (at Burlington Town Hall) to end. R on G.Washington Tpk., then first L on Cornwall. Turns to dirt road but continue to end and park in cul-de-sac or along road. Do not block any driveways. We will carpool to start of hike on Old Field Rd., where we will take the yellow-dot, white-dot, and mainline blue trails back to the cars. L: Len Berton
