L: Len Berton Saturday, October 27, 11am, SC, Mount Misery, Voluntown We’ll have a great view of Fall colors from the top of Mt. Misery (inappropriately named!). We’ll look east over Rhode Island on this relatively short hike. There are some steep parts to the summit. Take Rt 395 North from Rt 2 or I-95 to exit 85. Go through the intersection at the end of the exit to the second right onto Route 138 E. Then left (north) onto Rt 49. In one mile, take the Pachaug State Forest entrance on your left and bear right on the paved road. (Bearing left will bring you to a small parking area and an excellent birding platform overlooking a wetland. This is highly recommended before or after our hike). Follow the paved road until it turns to dirt. Bear right at the fork and go about a half mile. At the “Fire tower Rd., Mt. Misery” sign on your left, take a left and park in the circle. We'll walk up to the summit for a snack and a great view of Rhode Island. We’ll walk down the other side of the summit and through lots of woods back to the dirt road. We’ll walk up the dirt road for about ˝ mile back to the cars. The hike uphill and downhill is fairly steep but short in distance. Please wear good hiking shoes or boots as the trails going uphill are somewhat rocky. Please leave cell phones off for the hike (during my last hike here, reception was pretty poor anyway). Keep my cell phone number handy just in case the morning of the hike doesn’t look so good weather-wise: John C 860-508-9952 Sunday, October 28, 1:30pm.
