Thursday, April 3, 8:45am, FCE - Birge Pond, Bristol

8+ weekly FCE hikes begin. Please call FCE at 404-0290 and register for Course #08S1301: "Hikes", or click here to enroll on-line.  Distances will be about 4 - 6 miles, with back-to-cars goal before noon.  Also see Hiking Notes. First meeting is at Sessions Woods, Rt. 69, 3.4 miles south of its intersection with Rt 4, Burlington. 

We will carpool from there to Birge Pond in Bristol. A nice walk around a large pond with some boardwalks, then moderate climb to ridges, where we will see the large, glacially formed "hoppers" (aka "kettle holes"), and some nice overlooks. L: Len Berton

Tuesday, April 8, 7:15 am, FCE-U, Appalachian Trail, High Point, NJ

We will continue our trek on the AT. Meet in Burlington at the commuter lot adjacent to the Burlington Library/Little League field on Library Lane. This hike is about 9 miles. Anticipate a return time of about 8:30 pm to Burlington (but remember, be flexible). Please read the hiking list and pack accordingly, and of course bring plenty of water, snacks, and food. Thursday, April 10, 8:45 am, FCE - Peoples State Forest, Pleasant Valley

We will do some different trails from last season. We will loop up the Agnes Bowen Trail and return on the Robert Ross Trail. Meet at the main PSF parking lot. From Canton, take Rt. 44 W through New Hartford. Just over the Barkhamsted line, turn R on Rt. 181. At stop sign, go R over bridge, and 1st L on E. River Rd. Then about 1 mile to L into the Matthies Grove picnic area, just after passing Greenwoods Rd. on R. L: Len Berton

Saturday, April 12th, 10 am, SC, Westwoods, Guilford

About 6 miles in a very special preserved space on Connecticut’s overdeveloped coast. We’ll discuss the importance of saving such land in CT as well as the difficulties in doing so. (Mosquito repellent would be a good thing to bring along even though this is early Spring and may not be needed. Try some of the new deet-free repellents) From the junction of CT 77 and CT 146 in Guilford, follow CT 146 west 1.3 miles to Sam Hill Rd. to your right. Parking for the Westwoods trail entrance 3 is at this corner.  Bring plenty of water, snacks or lunch, and good hiking boots for stability and traction. Saturday, April 12, 4:30pm -- Talk: Rambling in Burlington = Burlington Land Trust Annual Meeting

The president of the Burlington Land Trust and the Southern Tunxis Trail manager will speak at Sessions Woods, Rt. 69, 3.4 miles south of its intersection with Rt 4, Burlington about the many miles of trails in Burlington. [See also May 14.] The Mile of Ledges trail [see May 15] will be one of the highlights of the presentation. There will also be some good hiking tips. Click here for more info. Monday, April 14, 10:45 am, LH, McLean Preserve, Simsbury

3 mile Eddy Loop plus 1 1/2 mile McLean Loop. Meet at 244 Farms Village Road/ Shopping Center, West Simsbury. Because parking at Eddy Loop is limited we will car pool to start. We should be back to cars by 1:30PM. Bring water. Lunch or snack optional. L: Jerry Marcum (860 810 0087)

Thursday, April 17, 8:45am, FCE - White Memorial Foundation, Litchfield

Meet at visitors' parking lot opposite museum. Take Rt. 4 through Burlington & Harwinton and go straight onto Rt. 118. Go past Rt 8 entrance & continue left on Rt. 118 to Litchfield, which runs into Rt. 202. WMF entrance is 2.5 miles W of Litchfield center on left. Trails will be different from last season. Sunday, April 20, 1:30pm. SG, Special Earth Day Celebration & Hike

All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please.

Thursday, April 24, 8:45 am, FCE - Metacomet Trail, Tariffville/E. Granby

We will carspot to do a 1-way route from Tariffville Gorge to Newgate Rd. From Rt309/Rt10 jnc go N on Rt. 10 in Simsbury. R on Wolcott Rd after passing Rt. 315. At end, R on Floydville Rd. Cross Rt. 189 (Hartford Rd). - name changes to Holcomb St. Cross Rt 20 (Turkey Hills Rd) and park along side (name changes to Newgate Rd). [From 309/10 est. is 6.6 mi./15 min.] L: Len Berton
