HOME | JULY 2008 SCHEDULE Tuesday, July 1, 8:45am, AMC - McCann Family Farm, Somers (C3D) Meet at Rt 4/Town Farm Rd. Farmington CPL at 8:45 to carpool to this AMC hike. We will stop in Simsbury at Drake's Hill Mall (Rt.10 & Drake's Hill Rd.) at about 9:05. A 3.5 mile walk in the woods on new trails maintained by the Northern CT Land Trust. Loop hike with no car spotting. AMC group meets at 10 a.m. at the McCann Family Farm parking lot on Route 190 (I-91 exit 47 E) in Somers, on the right 1.7 miles after the intersection with Rte. 83. Heavy rain cancels. L: Gene Grayson Thursday, July 10, 8:45am, LH - Tunxis Trail, Southington Meet at Unionville museum to car pool. Will decide on which section of trail when we meet (there are a few possible loops). Expect about 5 miles, and rough guess is to finish not too much after noon. Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. L: Jane Macomber Tuesday, July 15, 8:45am, LH Simsbury Land Trust, W. Simsbury Meet at Masters School, 36 Westledge Road, W Simsbury 06092. Or meet carpool at 8:20 at new Unionville River Trail parking lot - Rt.4 just N of Riverfront mini golf course. A great hike with hills, views, streams, scenic bridge and a waterfall. We will hike from the school parking lot and follow the red, green and white trails to Saddle Ridge Road. Distance approx. 3 to 4 miles. Once we all meet at the school we will car spot on Saddle Ridge. Bring water, sun block and bug spray. A lunch option is available at Mario's, a casual local restaurant within one mile of the Masters School. CL: Bill Lawry and Jerry Marcum 860 810 0087 Saturday, July 19th, 10 am, SC, Soapstone Mountain, Somers Learn why this natural resource was prized by Native Americans and early settlers in the midst of what is now the 6,000 acre Shenipsit State Forest. The hike is about 4 miles with a vertical rise of about 700 feet. It will be about 2.5 hours. From the junction of CT 140 and CT 83, N on CT 83 for 4 miles to Parker Road and turn right. After 1.3 miles (the last 0.4 miles is a three-season dirt road), at a four-way junction with Soapstone Road and Sykes Road, park across the way to your left. Bring plenty of water, snacks or lunch, and good hiking boots for stability and traction. Probably 6 miles, but depending on weather and wishes of the group, it will be easy to shorten or lengthen it. Bring water, snacks, sun block and bug spray.
