HOME | MARCH 2008 SCHEDULE Sunday, March 16, 11am, SG, Almost Spring Hikers' Hike A strenuous hike over rough terrain - FOR EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY! All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please. Saturday, March 22nd, 10 am, SC, Mt. Misery, Voluntown We got rained out on this one last Fall so here’s hoping the Spring may be kinder. Only about 3 miles with one steep uphill grade to the top of inappropriately titled “Mt. Misery.” Learn about how they used to “mine” cedar and maybe hear from the wood frog and some Spring peepers. From I-395 take exit 85 and head east on CT 138. Go straight off the exit ramp crossing the first street at what appears to be the end of the exit ramp. CT 138 will be the next road up. Go straight until CT 138 turns into CT 165. In about ˝ mile turn left onto CT 49 north. In one mile you’ll see the Pachaug State Forest entrance on your left. Once in the entrance, bear right on the paved road. (Bearing left will bring you to a small parking area and an excellent birding platform over-looking a wetland. This is highly recommended before or after our hike) Follow the paved road until it turns to dirt. You’ll come to a fork in the road and you’ll see a large open grass area in the middle of the fork. Bring plenty of water, snacks or lunch, and good hiking boots for stability and traction. RSVP: connecticut.chapter@sierraclub.org or 860-508-9952 Sunday, March 30, 1:30pm.
