Thursday, January 1, 2009, 1:30pm. SG, New Year’s Day Hike

Start the new year "on the right foot." All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please.

 

Sunday, February 15, 1:30pm. SG, Winter Tree Identification Hike

All hikes are open to the public. Hike will leave from the bulletin board at the Sleeping Giant Park entrance on the north side of Mt. Carmel Avenue in northern Hamden, about 0.5 mile east of Whitney Avenue. Hikers should wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring snacks and water, as desired. No pets, please.

Monday, February 16, 10am. LH, Presidents' Day: Farmington River in Avon

The trail is located at Fisher Meadows which is off Old Farms Road in Avon. Take Rt 10 to Avon Center.  At intersection with Rte 44, go straight ahead (O'Neill Chev/Buick will be on your right) and you will be on Old Farms Road. Continue for a mile or so and park in the Fisher Meadows parking area on your left. The parking area is just after Country Club Road on your right. Expect the walk to last about 2+ hours, 3 to 4 miles. The area is level with some ice and some muddy spots. We will walk along a gravel path and then join a Red blazed trail and then meet the newly completed Yellow blazed trail. We will then turn around and return to our cars. If you are coming from Farmington or Avon, please make note of where we are meeting. We are NOT meeting at the other Fisher Meadows parking area where the soccer fields are located. Meet in the parking lot of the McLean Game Refuge off of Rt 10/202 near the Simsbury-Granby town line. Anticipate an 11:30 am return. Bring appropriate footwear for icy/slippery conditions. L: Marie Coons

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thursday, February 19, 11:45am. LH, Town Forest Park, Simsbury

North from Rt 44 on 167/Bushy Hill Road. Left on Stratton Brook Road for approx 1/2 mile. Left on Town Forest Road [NOTE: you will see Walkers Crossing sign just before Town Forest Road] for approx 1 mile and parking is on left. NOTE: Parking area for our hike is near a storage building, near the ball field. We will start on orange along the brook, green then blue and work our way back via orange. Flat to rolling with no major hills. Approx 2 - 2 1/2 hours. L: Jerry Marcum

Thursday, February 26, 9:30am. LH, Wolcott Trail

2.5 miles plus some checking out of the Wolcott/ Muir Connector and how it connects to the John Muir Trail. Meet at Ocean State parking lot. Carpool to Torrington.  Option: We may try to have a late lunch at Geri's in Torrington L: Jerry Marcum 860 810 0087

Saturday, February 28, 10am. LH, McLean Preserve, Simsbury/Granby

Meet on Firetown Road parking area near Eddy Loop. Distance: One way from parking area to Rt 10 main McLean parking area using a car spot. Allow 3 to 4 hours.
