There is something for everyone in the 158 acre preserve on Jones Mountain in New Hartford: traditional hiking trails, steep climb, flat walking on a wide carriage road, a wooden man-made bridge, a rock crossing across a stream, an overlook. This 2 1/4 hour hike will take us through white pines, swaths of ferns, moss, and past beautiful stonework. Meet in New Hartford center on Central Ave. off Rt. 219 W of Rt. 44 in Immaculate Conception Church's parking lot. We'll then carpool five minutes to the trailhead. Meet in the Crescent Pond (aka Plainville Reservoir) parking lot on Shuttlemeadow Rd, Southington. From Farmington Center take RT 10 south, bear left onto Cooke St., left onto Rt. 372, right onto Crooked St.; at the end, right on Woodford Ave., left on Ledge Rd., and follow Ledge Rd. even as it changes its name to Shuttlemeadow Rd. (now you are in Southington). The hike will go up the ridge on the south side of Crescent Pond, meet with the Metacomet, go north to the Bradley Mtn area, returning via a trail on the north side of Crescent Pond. to Dec. 8Peak Mountain and the Metacomet trail from Suffield to E Granby. Meet at 8:30 at the Rt 20 and Newgate Rd trailhead, which is 0.7 mile W of E Granby center on Rt 20 (Turkey Hill Rd). Park on Newgate Road, which will be a left turn if you are traveling W on Rt 20. We will carpool to Rt 168 in Suffield and hike back to the Newgate trailhead. Hike is 5 miles with moderate difficulty and should take approx 3+ hours. Beautiful views of the Metacomet Ridge and Manituck Mountain and the Litchfield Hills. October 27, 8:45am, FCE, Westledge & Firetown Trails, W. Simsbury Postponed to Dec. 15We will do the Westledge Trail [out and back] plus a portion of the [loop] Firetown Trail. The trail ascends over terrain of a former stagecoach route and passes old stone foundations of a once thriving agriculture community. Total distance approximately 4.5 miles.
