HOME | SEPTEMBER 2012 SCHEDULE Monday, September 10, 1pm, BLT, Devil's Kitchen, Burlington This is the fifth hike of a 5-hike series co-sponsored by the Burlington Land Trust and the Parks & Rec Department. This is the grand hike through beautiful Devil’s Kitchen (a natural box canyon) near the Nassahegan Forest. Hikes are 1 - 2 hours. Fee: $11 at trail head. Rain dates announced as needed. Main line and orange-dot Tunxis Trail loop through Devil's Kitchen. Meet at end of Miller Rd. Difficulty: hard. 4.2 miles. We'll walk along the Farmington River, cross a brook and make a gradual ascent to the ridge line for spectacular views of the river, Tariffville, Simsbury and Granby, then will continue on to the summit of Hatchet Hill. Meet at the intersection of Turkey Hill Rd./Rt. 20 and Newgate Rd. in East Granby; then we'll car spot to Rt. 189 and Old Hartford Rd. in Tariffville. Thursday, September 27, 2012, 8:45 AM, FCE, Peoples State Forest, Barkhamsted Take Rt 44 West past New Hartford and go right on Rt 181. At junction with 318, go right over the bridge and take an immediate left onto East River Rd. Travel N on East River Road to Matthies Grove parking lot. Turn left into lot and then go right to the the end of the lot. We will then car spot to Park Road, off Rt 181. Carpoolers can meet at Rt 44 and 179 commuter lot at 8:30. We will hike E Bronson trail and along the way do the Landgraf loop. At the end of the Bronson trail (at Greenwoods Rd and the Stone Museum), we will meet up with and hike the R Ross trail until we intersect with the A Bowen trail. We will then take the A Bowen trail to the E River Road trailhead for A Bowen and return on the road and pathway to cars parked in M Grove lot. Estimated miles are 4.5.
